One of my favourite places on the Island, Cumberland is known for their community forest, world-class mountain biking, extensive trail network and huge glacier-fed lake. We drove up pretty early through dramatic Island weather; one minute pouring rain, next minute sunny. Cumberland Lake Park is a popular spot in the summer, full of campers and …
This is a neat little park along a stream in Nanaimo. It’s accessed behind a plaza and I never would’ve guessed there was a forest here. Walk along the park and you pop out at Departure Bay – there’s a beach and access to ferry parking lot. Who knew? Lots of stairs.
Guest Post by Jimmy This was a dangerous hike in which many experienced hikers have died! Exciting! We found the trailhead on an unpaved road near a bunch of “Grizzly Bear” signs that urged us not to shoot the beasts. The trail started off in the woods, then upwards on a steep cliff. We used …
An easy rainy day walk, Ammonite Falls Regional Trail takes about an hour, there and back. The trail starts on a logging road. At the fork, veer right and you will see a blue Ammonite Falls trail marker. The trail is very well maintained and well marked, with posts at every fork and orange markers …
Taking advantage of nap time, LJ and I went on a beautiful afternoon hike. This is a loop trail along Cowichan River from Skultz Falls to 66 Mile Trestle. The trail takes hikers through the forest to water’s edge. The views are incredible and there are many side trails leading to look outs and perfect …
Max and I checked out Bowen Park. We saw ducks, totem poles, a pond, a river and a waterfall. Maxi loved sitting and watching the waterfall. He said it was “loud” and there was “soap” in the water (white water). At the beginning of the walk we came across a tree stump. Max asked me …
This is a nice loop walk around both sides of the river/falls with bridges, nice hill action, huge trees, and WATERFALLS. The water was clear, green and cold. There were a lot of people here today. Doesn’t anyone work? I wore a t-shirt with sun block. I missed that smell.
